If you're looking for the best DAW that you can get under $200, then Apple's Logic Express is the way to go. Of course, then you have to have a Mac. For regular analog use, I still like my Onyx 1620 quite a bit. I bought Tracktion 3 from Musician's Friend earlier this year. Having no experience with DAW's it has been a bit of a learning curve, but from what I've learned this is with any DAW software.

For the price, it can't be beat. I would recommend this to anyone either just getting started in digital recording, or looking for a good budget build. The only downsides to the software is that it is no longer supported (works fine with XP) and it is not used by many people. So if you plan on sending your recordings to a studio for mastering then you may want to consider Pro Tools or something similar. I bought this because of all the features it listed and I thought is would have been a good program but I was wrong. Everytime I open up Tracktion it comes up as a demo and asking me to register it.

I must have register it a million time now and its still doing the same thing.The program very complicated, its not easy to use as you are lead to believe. When recording vocals it does not show it in wave form until you stop the recording. I have used other programs that were much more easier, less confusing, cheaper, and with the same or better sound quality.Tracktion is not worth it, buy something much better, trust me do not waste your money on this program, I am very disappointed in this program.

BUY SOMETHING ELSE. I use traction 3 for all my mix's. I upgraded from Traction 2 and oh what an upgrade that was.

I always had CPU problems with 2 and 3 solved that issue. Now ill admit if your not use to traction this will throw you for a loop but as soon as you know how to use it its an easy DAW to use just like any other DAW out there. For me I find Mackie's way building a DAW to be easier to use then most other's but that my own opinion.what I dont like about it are the VST's.

Out of all the plugins that it comes with I maybe use 3 max. I find even free online VST's tend to be better to mix with on traction 3. I am normally a big fan of Mackie products (mixers, speakers etc are great).

However, Mackie got this one wrong. Traction 3 will only work on ONE specific 10.5 OS upgrade according to Mackie tech support. All other MAC OS systems are unsupported and Traction will crash. The download 'FIX' helps a little with the crashes, but the plug-ins (mainly the Mackie plug-ings) still do not work correctly. I have been able to figure out some work arounds to get them functioning, but it's still very frustrating.

All those add-ons make a very attractive offer. However, the one catch they fail to mention is that most of the included VST add-ons are locked to Tracktion and cannot be used with any other DAW or VST host. A major let down on this end.

I think Mackie should come clean and list which VSTs are locked to Tracktion. The only three I was able to figure out how to get working: Sampletank, GPO, and Drumcore TK (via rewire).The DAW itself is a fair value for the sale price. Its biggest drawback is the cluttered interface. Not much polish here.

For those on a very tight budget try to pick this one up on sale. Otherwise, you will find many more features available in another low-cost DAW.Additional note: I had problems with Tracktion when trying to make it a rewire slave with Ableton live and FL Studio. It worked fine as a rewrire host. I've had Tracktion for quite a long time.

There are some quirks and changes in v3 that I had to sort out, but I've mixed down an album with it and have loved it's relatively small footprint and speed.
